The city’s newest playground in the Lincoln Park neighborhood.

YONKERS, NY – June 25, 2015 – Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano, Council President Liam J. McLaughlin, members of the Yonkers City Council and local residents broke ground today on the City’s newest playground in the Lincoln Park neighborhood. The construction of the playground, which will be built on a portion of the Lincoln High School parking lot, was made possible after the Yonkers Board of Education transferred the property to the City.

Spearheaded by Council President McLaughlin, the new 10,000-square-feet playground will be designed by leading playground manufacturer KOMPAN and will include nine state-of-the-art pieces of playground equipment to entertain children ages 2-12.

“Our parks and playgrounds are at the center of our residents’ lives and define the shape and feel of our neighborhoods,” said Mayor Mike Spano. “I want to thank Council President Liam McLaughlin for spearheading the effort to bring this playground to Lincoln Park. It will enhance the quality of life for residents in the neighborhood and make this area of Yonkers even more attractive for future residents and young families.”Lincoln Park Playground

“Residents in the Lincoln Park area have long felt a playground was needed, and with this inventive and adaptive reuse of a parking lot in disrepair, we will have unpaved a parking lot to put up a child’s paradise,” Council President McLaughlinsaid. “Having been brought up in this area, I’ve long recognized that there was a real need for a local park, however the location was always an issue. Therefore I would like to thank Barry and Erin McGoey whose idea of using this grossly underutilized parking lot helped clear the way for today’s groundbreaking. I’m proud to have been able to bring this idea to fruition and look forward to the day when neighborhood children can play in our new park.”

The Lincoln Park Playground is designed for users of all abilities.  With a focus on movement, the playground provides a balance of activities that will help children with health, learning and social inclusion.  Appropriate for younger children, ages 2-5, as well as older children, ages 5-12, the playground will feature several large pieces of equipment, a large rope climbing dome and a transparent design that will allow parents to keep an eye of their playing children. The playground is expected to be completed in fall 2015.

The new playground is the latest addition to the City’s Parks System which includes more than 70 parks, playgrounds and facilities including the renowned Untermyer Gardens, Murray’s Skating Center and JFK Marina.

Andrew Kimball, KOMPAN Director, Northeast Group said, “KOMPAN is extremely proud to be partnering with the 4th largest City in New York.  Yonkers has been a focus area for KOMPAN and it is an honor to be able to serve this fine community.  The state of the art design and equipment choice will truly bring years of enjoyment to this City.  The best part of my job is seeing the smiles on children’s faces when they get a chance to be free and play their way on a one of a kind playground; it’s why this is so much fun!”
